remember john boehner said he wasn't going to do any more big deals or even try. he knows these folks in the republican conference won't vote for anything. mitch mcconnell said the discussion is over and no more talk of revenues. just a summary statement. what have they got to offer? are they sitting down to work it out? no. they offer yet another crisis and sequential series of efforts to shut it down so as to get their way. all they have got to offer is that and that means the sequester will come and a lot of republicans are saying let it come. in effect, don't worry about slowing down the growth rate and the job impact. let it come. >> the belief is that republicans think if it comes, folks say here are the democrats and the president asking for tax revenue as a solution and perhaps that will bring on heat. i will have to bring up what speaker boehner said. just before the state of the union saying that the president getting personal and saying he has no guts to stand up to his own party. matt lauer asking about that on the "today" show. here's what he said. >>

he said, john paul led the church to the end because he was convinced that one doesn't come down from the cross. a lot of people interpreted that as essentially the pope taking the easy way out. he's elderly, he's tired and so he's going to retire. >> i think that would be a bad way to look at this. these are two decisions in conscious made by two men of conscious. john paul ii's decision to live his dying publically was his last great teaching moment and the world responded to that in a remarkable way. benedict xvi thought it wouldn't play out that way and he was not going to hold the stage simply to hold the stage. he was going to make a humble act of acceptance of what he believes is god's will. >> is he making the decision about when the conclave will start? there are a lot of people who will wait the 15 days. normally it would be a period of mourning, but the pope has not died. >> i find this frankly ratherer puzzling myself. i'm told the decision was made by the dean of the college of cardinals and the guy who runs the church, if you will. it does seem to me to be rather a long

add to this fresh insult of rand paul to put a hold on john brennan. looks like republicans are backing a cynical strategy that could compromise national security while proliferating partisanship. let's put it this perspective. republicans decided to filibuster a republican secretary of defense nominee. someone mitch mcconnell once called one of the most respected foreign policy. someone john mccain said would be an excellent secretary of state in his administration. it's fictional one. avalon writes this bitter confirmation fight is sadly ironic because picking a member of the opposite party usually an olive branch. remember how that would be seen as outreach? no longer. the abuse of a filibuster to delay or block the confirmation of the secretary of defense raises questions about filibuster reform because if a senator had to hold the floor and risk his bladder like jimmy stewart in "mr. smith goes to washington" while keeping 51 of his colleagues on the floor during presidents' day weekend my guess is this block wouldn't have occurred. >> i guess i'l
